Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) provides the public with the right to request access to records from any federal agency. It is often described as the law that keeps citizens in the know about their government.
Congressional Records
Please note that the Freedom of Information Act applies to federal executive branch agencies and does not apply to Congress or the legislative branch. Congressional records are governed by separate rules and procedures.
Public Records
Many congressional documents, including bills, resolutions, committee reports, and hearing transcripts, are publicly available through official congressional resources. The Congressional Record, which is the official record of proceedings and debates of the U.S. Congress, is available online.
How to Access Records
For access to legislative documents, committee hearings, and other public congressional records, visit Congress.gov or contact the relevant committee office directly. For executive branch records, submit a FOIA request to the appropriate federal agency.
