Steering Committee

The House Republican Steering Committee plays a critical role in the organizational structure of the Republican Conference. The Committee is responsible for recommending Republican members for assignment to House standing committees at the beginning of each Congress.

Responsibilities

The Steering Committee reviews applications from Republican members seeking committee assignments, evaluates candidates based on qualifications, legislative interests, and regional representation, and submits recommendations to the full Conference for approval.

Composition

The Committee is chaired by the Speaker of the House and includes members of the elected leadership, regional representatives chosen by their peers, and additional members appointed to ensure geographic and philosophical diversity within the Conference.

Process

Committee assignments are determined through a transparent and merit-based process. Members may request assignments by submitting a letter of interest detailing their qualifications and legislative priorities relevant to the committees they seek.
